Police secured the crash site in the Mojave Desert amid fears that some of the debris could be explosive

The investigation into the Virgin Galactic spacecraft crash in California's Mojave Desert could take about a year, the head of the US transport safety agency has said.

Christopher Hart said Virgin Galactic would be able conduct further test flights while the investigation took place.

SpaceShipTwo broke up in mid-air during a test flight on Friday.

One of the pilots was killed and the other injured.

Virgin chief Sir Richard Branson says he is "determined to find out what went wrong" and learn from the tragedy.

The US National Transportation Safety Board team had completed its first full day of investigation, Mr Hart said, and would be examining evidence at the scene for four to seven days.

He said the craft's debris was spread over an area measuring five miles from end to end.

He told a news conference the test flight had been "heavily documented" and his team would have to trawl through "extensive data" - which was why the full investigation could take "about 12 months or so".

However, he added than any discoveries of issues that required "immediate attention" would be communicated to Virgin Galactic.

The co-pilot who died when SpaceShipTwo disintegrated shortly after take-off was named as 39-year-old Michael Alsbury. The pilot was identified as Peter Siebold.

Scaled Composites, the company both pilots worked for, said Mr Siebold, 43, was "alert and talking with his family and doctors".

Mr Hart said his team were waiting for doctors to allow them to interview Mr Siebold.

'A massive setback'

Speaking earlier at the at the Mojave Air and Space Port, where the craft was being developed, Sir Richard said "nobody underestimates the risks involved in space travel".

Virgin Galactic had hoped to launch commercially in 2015. It has already taken more than 700 flight bookings at $250,000 (£156,000) each, with Sir Richard pledging to travel on the first flight.

"It's a horrible day for Virgin Galactic and for commercial space travel. It's a massive setback," Sir Richard told the BBC.

He said the company had to pick itself up, find out what went wrong and see whether they can fix it. "I'm hopeful we'll be able to overcome the problems," he added.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04665142496897730322noreply@blogger.com0สหรัฐอเมริกา39.0959629363055 -99.8437513.573928436305497 -141.152344 64.6179974363055 -58.535156tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557457619478238914.post-20818202584087892402014-11-01T23:05:00.006-07:002014-11-01T23:05:55.427-07:00Mustang Magic: A quick ride in the 2015 Ford Mustang

The 2015 Ford Mustang has been discussed at length, and the switch from a live axle to an independant suspension may be heresy in the eyes of naysayers, but unfortunately I think the live axle technology was taken to its limit in the last model. Theoretically, it could be made better, but it would be kind of like perfecting a black-and-white TV by making it an OLED flatscreen. You could make it, but why?

I was able to take a quick spin in one of the loaded EcoBoost 2.3 2015 Ford Mustangs that features 310 horsepower being pumped out of the four-cylinder. What’s nice? A memory seat with seat positions in the Mustang?! Yes, one for comfort, one for track, and one for the Missus. The six-speed automatic with paddle shifters also is really nice – I know, but remember they still make a GT for those who want to shift themselves. There is even discussion of letting customers pick their own rear end ratio in the EcoBoost model, just like the old days. Acceleration or economy?

The engine start button is in the right place on the dashboard for nostalgia – located low and next to some older-school toggle switches.

Overall, when you think of the Mustangs 5.0s of my Vanilla Ice youth were rated at 225 horsepower, we have come a long way. A 310-horsepower four-cylinder that isn’t some SVO special edition?!

And if you were wondering what the Coyote 5.0 can do when the Pirellis are on Ford check out the video below:

I had to smile at my wife’s first reaction when I handed her my new iPad Air 2 to check out straight from the box. “It’s awfully heavy,” quoth the resolutely non-tech-oriented love of my life.

Say what??!

Translated, what she meant, I think, was that for a device with such a razor-thin form factor, it still has reassuring heft, a point on which I concur. I have never considered my iPad 2 to be particularly porky, but the Air 2 (hopefully the number 2 will prove as auspicious with this machine as it has with the older unit) is definitely more vestigial, and appeals to my taste for miniaturization without loss of function.

I’m pleased with the gold color. I like both the traditional White/Silver and Black/Space Gray themes, but they have been getting a bit “been there; done that” and the gold is a refreshing change. I particularly like the look of the gold around the periphery of the display bezel in top/edge viewing aspects.

It’s understatement to say the Air 2 is faster. It’s afterburners-on compared to the old A5-powered Air. I’m also looking forward to the four times greater system RAM, allowing faster switching among open apps and browser tabs, which has been an increasingly major source of frustrating slowdowns on the iPad 2 lately, even though cautionary prudence has kept me from upgrading to reportedly even slower iOS 8 on the old machine after reports that it’s even more sluggish on A5 Pads. The iPad Air 2, of course, came loaded up with iOS 8, but it has plenty of power to support it.

The new fully-laminated Retina Display is beautiful. I haven’t been chafing with the iPad 2′s relatively mediocre 1,024 x 768 panel, but the Retina is definitely nicer; much brighter and snappier with higher contrast. Hopefully, the anti-glare coating will hold up in use.

I don’t find TouchID much of a big whoop. Typing in four-letter passcodes is really no hardship, and I find Touch ID misfires annoyingly often, even though I have recalibrated my thumbprint three times.

The Lightning connector is two-year-old news, but this is my first device to have it. I found no deficiency in the old 30-pin connector, and for me Lightning is just another proprietary bit to possibly get lost or damaged and not as easy/cheap to replace.

These are very early days impressions. I’m not a fast adopter of new hardware, and prefer to ease into it slowly and deliberately. I did a full iTunes backup of the iPad 2 onto my MacBook Air and restored it onto the iPad Air 2. The settings “took” (mostly), but I found that the restore didn’t bring my app collection with it, and I’ve been obliged to manually download dozens of apps via the iTunes “Purchased” pane. Not sure whether this is normal or not, and it isn’t a show-stopper, but has been time consuming and tedious.

Consequently, three days on I’m still using the old iPad 2 for production while I experiment with the Air 2 and get it configured the way I like it. The 2 feels like a comfortable old shoe/glove/pair of jeans—the new has long since worn off, but I know exactly what to expect. I’ll get comfortable with the Air 2 in time, but it’s not a process I like to rush. I think I’m going to really like this new tablet, but it will be some time before I know for sure.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04665142496897730322noreply@blogger.com0สหรัฐอเมริกา37.09024 -95.71289100000001337.09024 -95.712891000000013 37.09024 -95.712891000000013tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557457619478238914.post-89995919220885744642014-11-01T21:12:00.001-07:002014-11-01T21:12:18.620-07:00Review: Twisty Hollow for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

It’s time to serve your customers. What could they possibly want? Bacon, of course!

Twisty Hollow gives you three concentric circles with some icons. Line up the correct sequence of icons and the bacon gets made, the customer gets to eat the bacon, and, as in real life, everyone is happy.

Mmmmmmm, bacon…

So, they start adding things like fish and diamonds and sushi in later levels, but we’ll always have bacon. The goal is to make sure all of your customers get served. As the game progresses, customers may leave or even set a fire on a finished product slot if they do not get what they want quickly enough.

Gameplay is handled entirely via tap and swipe. The dial motion is very much like the selection wheel on the old click wheel iPod (may it rest in peace). The game sports some Saturday cartoon style graphics (the characters remind me a little bit of the Mii characters) and bouncy backing music. The controls are fairly easy to use but you need to be careful on the small iPhone scree or you may end up moving the wrong circle
Twisty Hollow is moderately fun and is a good enough occupier of idle time, but that’s about all. The “cute” graphics and relatively easy play will probably help it go over better with the young gamers.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04665142496897730322noreply@blogger.com0สหรัฐอเมริกา37.09024 -95.712891000000013-36.4181565 99.052733999999987 90 69.521483999999987tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557457619478238914.post-87007937502007370752014-11-01T21:00:00.000-07:002014-11-01T21:00:12.796-07:00Apple lawsuit wrap-up for October 2014

Apple lawsuits in October 2014 ran the gamut from class-action to patent to trademark, and there was a blast from the past no one could have foreseen.

Apple won a patent lawsuit filed by WiLan after the two LTE patents being used were invalidated.

Many years ago, Apple used FairPlay, a Digital Rights Management (DRM) to keep unauthorized computers and devices from playing music purchased on iTunes. Now Apple is facing a $350 million anti-trust lawsuit claiming the DRM was used to stifle market competition and make it difficult for customers to move to another platform.

Russian Railways has to wait until November 20th to appeal a court decision that ruled in favor of Apple. Russian Railways sued Apple after an app used its logo without permission and wants 2 million rubles (approximately $55,807).

Bose dismissed the patent lawsuit they filed against Beats Electronics after accusing them of infringing on several of their noise-cancelling headphone patents.

Robert Herskowitz brought a $5 million lawsuit against Apple in 2012 saying that Apple defrauded customers by billing twice for songs purchased in iTunes and they couldn’t get refunds. Later, he joined forces with Phoebe Juel who sued Apple after being charged for a song she already bought but couldn’t locate on her computer. Their combined lawsuit recently got dismissed after they reached a settlement with Apple.

The High-Tech Employee Antitrust Litigation brought against Apple, Google, Adobe, and Intel after they entered a no-poaching agreement is still continuing. The latest news is the tech workers who brought the lawsuit are asking a federal appeals court to deny the $324.5 million settlement offered.

It was only a matter of time before angry 2011 MacBook Pro owners sued Apple over its apparent lack of response to the graphical problems they’ve suffered due to faulty hardware. They were forced to pay out-of-pocket to fix their laptops by replacing the logic board, which could be as much as $600. The plaintiffs want Apple to “acknowledge a defect in the 2011 MacBook Pro models, notify owners of the issue, bear the costs of inspection of affected machines, and pay the full costs of repairs and damages.”

iVoice Enterprises asked India’s Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB) to remove Apple’s iPhone trademark from the Trademark Registry. Patently Apple notes that iVoice Enterprises has a trademark for Indian Phone, which they abbreviate as iFon. Is the trademark for Indian Phone or iFon? If the former, then Apple has nothing to worry about. If the latter, then it will probably be up to the courts to decide if iFon is close enough to iPhone to make a difference.

GPNE Corp. sued Apple using patents originally designed for pagers 20 years ago claiming several iOS products violated them. Since the patents expired, the lawsuit was thrown out, prompting an Apple spokesman to call them a patent troll attempting to “extort money from Apple for 20-year-old pager patents that have expired, wasting time for everyone involved.”

Yes, I know Halloween is over, technically. It’s November; time for snow. But the scares don’t have to quit coming just yet (or ever, because they’re fun), so the beautiful people of GameAgent have rounded up 13 Mac games to play on Halloween…and beyond.

The list comes from Russ Looney, a fellow who knows a thing or two about Mac gaming. And even better, the list is on one page! It’s not click bait! #7 won’t blow your mind, and you totally will believe #11.

A few obvious choices appear, such as The Walking Dead series (we highly suggest you avoid Season 2), Dead Island and Amnesia: The Dark Descent, but there are some pretty unique finds in here, too. Not all of the games are aimed at horror fans, either. Some are just spooky, while others are more about your basic Halloween fun, safe for the kids.

Prices for the games range from $2.99 to $39.99, with most of them dropping between $5.00 and $20.00. Head on over to GameAgent to see the full list, then take your pick. 13 is a lot of games, after all, and it’s likely you’ve already played some of these, anyway. Personally, I think I’m going to use this opportunity to finally play Limbo.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04665142496897730322noreply@blogger.com0สหรัฐอเมริกา37.71859032558816 -99.492187512.19655582558816 -140.8007815 63.240624825588156 -58.1835935tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557457619478238914.post-51348968644549171302014-11-01T12:31:00.000-07:002014-11-01T12:31:41.831-07:00Skyrim’s Erik The Slayer Is Still A Jerk

Not too long ago, I wrote an article proclaiming Erik the Slayer to be a huge jerk. I based this on the fact that I had more than one screen shot of Erik the Slayer standing by, doing absolutely nothing as NPCs were attacked by vicious beasts. After that article went live, I had several people point out to me that Erik the Slayer is based on an Elder Scrolls super-fan who has since passed away. I’m not sure how that stops this resident of from being a jerk, but perhaps it’s something about not speaking ill of the dead.

I would let it go, but I have even more evidence that Erik the Slayer is a huge jerk.

Yes, that’s Erik the Slayer, choosing to continue farming even though the dead body of his neighbor is right in front of him. What kind of a person does that? What sort of person watches the Dragonborn slaughter a defenseless man so that she can adopt his children, and chooses to go right on farming?

What’s even worse is that Erik the Slayer doesn’t even like farming! He all but begged me to talk his father into letting him go out on adventures, and this was after watching me slaughter his neighbor! You know what kind of person does that?

A huge jerk, that’s what kind of person.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04665142496897730322noreply@blogger.com1สหรัฐอเมริกา37.09024 -95.71289100000001337.09024 -95.712891000000013 37.09024 -95.712891000000013tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557457619478238914.post-20888476721598518782014-11-01T12:12:00.000-07:002014-11-01T12:12:16.102-07:00A comparison between JVC and Boss head units

The JVC KW-V50BT is pricey, but has sleek controls.

I was first impressed by Boss speakers after hearing them in a 2006 Nissan Altima S. It was a base model, so I was pleasantly surprised by the hard-hitting speakers.

The JVC head unit that was later installed in the car really brought the speakers to life, and that was when I was truly impressed. The head unit was pretty cool — black with a sweet color-changing display and interface. It was the KW-XR610 model, and it included a remote, USB, and AUX port. It wasn’t too expensive, costing just $150 with the adapter and hardware from Crutchfield, if I remember correctly.

For a relatively low-cost modification, I was pretty happy with the performance of the speakers, which is what led me to explore the options offered by each manufacturer. The crystal clear nine-speaker Bose system in my 2008 Saab 9-3 Aero is quite an earful as-is, but I’m looking to raise it to the next level by adding a 12-inch sub – or two – to lower the bass in the other speakers and really let them sing. It will take some tweaking and tuning of the power levels to match the stock speakers with the installed subwoofers, but it should allow me to maintain the impressive clarity while reaching a whole new level of loud.

The Boss BV9364B puts out 80 watts by four channels and costs just $159.99, making a play in any “power-per-dollar” comparison.

The first step in all of this is installing sound insulation to reduce if not completely diminish any rattling noises caused by the vibrations of the bass. After this, I can see everything the system has to offer as it comes from the factory. The difference in quality of sound would have to be significant enough for me to justify the extra weight in the car – yeah, I’m that guy.

I currently have a Kenwood single-DIN I intend on using with the triple gauge pod I’m having 3D-printed. However, if I decide to upgrade, the new JVC KW-V50BT looks very intriguing. With a nice seven-inch touchscreen display and a simple design, this radio has the sleek look I favor. The new customizable interface is interesting, as well, allowing a user to set shortcuts to more frequently used features, as well as more convenient touch-controls for settings such as volume or changing songs.

It has way more features than the comparison model by Boss, which is the BV9364B. Another large-screen, double-DIN head unit, it is admittedly slightly smaller than the JVC by 0.8 inches. The JVC puts out 50 watts per each of the four channels, while the Boss puts out 80 watts per four channels. The biggest difference would be the price – the Boss model is only $159.99. Compared to the pricey JVC, which is $599.95, that’s about a $440 difference. While the JVC has more bells and whistles, I’m not sure it would be enough to sway me to cough up the extra cash.

If you were interested in this, check out the follow up article coming soon, in which I give a comparison between JVC and Boss amplifiers, subwoofers, and capacitors.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04665142496897730322noreply@blogger.com0สหรัฐอเมริกา37.09024 -95.712891000000013-36.4181565 99.052733999999987 90 69.521483999999987tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557457619478238914.post-33063826195436672582014-11-01T11:45:00.000-07:002014-11-01T11:45:33.176-07:00I fell in love with a cop car: A look at 2015 Chevrolet Impala fuel economy

The 2015 Chevy Impala’s fuel economy checked in at a few ticks over 21 MPG after a week of driving. Not horrible for city traffic with a 305-horsepower V6.

So the fuel economy numbers are in on the full size 2015 Chevrolet Impala with the big 3.6 V6 instead of the entry-level 2.5-liter four-cylinder mill – and they are not so bad.

Over my mixed week of driving, I got 21.3 MPG. But what do you want from a 305-horsepower V6? What is nice is the 18.5-gallon tank that means fill-ups are spaced farther apart than the competition.

Want to know what else I dug? The Rear Cross Traffic Alert. GM was wise enough to put a display with arrows showing what direction it senses the impending vehicle is coming from. It really worked for me. I like to put on my reverse lights to show intent when backing out of a spot, and the 2015 Chevrolet Impala had my back warning me not to go until it was safe.

Was there any feature that I wasn’t particularly digging? Just the Hill Hold/start assist. It is supposed to actuate the brake so you can take your foot off of it, but I was never able to get it to modulate correctly on my steep driveway. The feature is supposed to kick in for 1.5 seconds, or the time an elderly person needs to get from the brake back onto the gas. If I could have easily, I would have just turned it off.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04665142496897730322noreply@blogger.com0สหรัฐอเมริกา37.09024 -95.71289100000001337.09024 -95.712891000000013 37.09024 -95.712891000000013tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557457619478238914.post-71233916935634877642014-11-01T11:29:00.000-07:002014-11-01T11:29:18.230-07:00THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN BANG & OLUFSEN DECIDES TO MAKE A PORTABLE BLUETOOTH SPEAKER

Bang and Olufsen’s products rarely go unnoticed. The brand’s iconic designs have been featured in all kinds of movies and television shows because they are incredibly distinct and memorable. You might think, then, that something as commonplace as a Bluetooth speaker should come out looking pretty wild when taken on by the Danish audio and video specialist, but the recently introduced BeoPlay A2 isn’t as outlandish as we’d hoped … it’s actually pretty refined.

Don’t let the A2’s simple shape fool you, though. There’s plenty that’s remarkable about this $400 speaker (aside from the price), starting with a class-leading 24-hour battery life, which makes playing music for long periods while charging a device a much more realistic proposition. B&O also outfitted the A2 with active drivers and passive radiators on both sides of the book-ish looking speaker, so that you hear sound clearly no matter which direction it is facing. We’re also big fans of the leather strap, which makes toting the speaker around as easy as it should be (but often isn’t, with other Bluetooth speakers).
Take a look at the speaker up close in our video. It’s sleek, simple, but effective. And it sounds impressive as well. It’s a little on the bright side for our tastes, but its overall sound signature is the sort that will catch a lot of ears — and eyes — at social occasions.
The UK Met Office has announced a £97 million investment in a new Cray XC40TM supercomputer

The UK's obsession with the weather has just been stepped up a gear. The Met Office has announced that it will begin using a new supercomputer enabling highly detailed forecasts. The Cray XC40TM will cost £97 million (US$156 million) and is aimed at making the UK a world leader in weather and climate science.

The Met Office is the UK's public weather and climate research agency. The data it produces is made available for use by other organizations and has previously been employed for showing temperature records in Google Earth and and by Micasa Lab's indoor cloud-making machine. This most recent investment will help to improve the volume and accuracy of the data produced.

The Cray XC40TM is one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. It has 480,000 cores, 2 million gigabytes of memory and can store up to 17 million gigabytes of data. At its peak, it is able to make 16,000 trillion calculations per second.

The system is a significant upgrade from the current IBM Power 775, which has a memory of 80,000 gigabytes, can store up to 2 million gigabytes and can make 1,200 trillion calculations per second.

The computer will enable hourly forecasting with a much higher level of weather detail for precise geographic areas and the ability to create much higher resolution weather modeling for localized areas. The Met Office says that that it will be possible to create models for areas down to a resolution of 300 m (984 ft), allowing it to effectively predict differences in weather conditions between city blocks or even individual streets. It will also be possible to better predict weather over longer periods, allowing for better preparation against developing climate trends such as flooding, droughts and heatwaves.

According to the Met Office, this could lead to £2 billion of socio-economic benefits to the UK, allowing airports to operate at a greater level of efficiency, properties to be better protected from flooding and winter infrastructure to be better planned. Planning for renewable energy infrastructure and climate change research will also benefit.

The Cray XC40TM will be located partly at the Met Office HQ in Exeter and partly at a purpose-designed building at the nearby Exeter Science Park (pending planning permission). It will become semi-operational in September 2015 and will reach full capacity in 2017.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04665142496897730322noreply@blogger.com0สหรัฐอเมริกา38.548165423046584 -101.601562513.026130923046583 -142.9101565 64.070199923046587 -60.2929685tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557457619478238914.post-48657002019307043222014-11-01T03:39:00.001-07:002014-11-01T03:39:39.147-07:00LG introduces DCI 4K monitor that trumps UHD 4K

The LG 31MU97 monitor has DCI 4K resolution of 4096 x 2160, which is a digital cinema standard

UHD 4K computer monitors (with a resolution of 3840 x 2160, like 4K TVs) have only started being released relatively recently. Already, though, manufacturers are offering monitors with higher specs still. LG's new 31MU97 has a DCI 4K resolution of 4096 x 2160, a standard used for digital cinema.

The 4K market has moved on apace since we questioned whether its time had come back in February. This year has seen a wealth of devices released, despite there still not being a great deal of content available to view on them. The 31MU97, however, is not so much for people consuming 4K content, as it is for those who work with it. The monitor is aimed squarely at visual creatives, such as photographers, video editors and graphic artists.

In addition to its DCI 4K resolution, the 31MU97 supports 10-bit color and over 99.5 percent of the Adobe RGB color space, designed by Adobe to recreate the CMYK color printer palette. It also covers 97 percent of the DCI-P3 color space, the standard for digital cinema projectors and digital cameras.

The monitor can be calibrated to several different color modes depending on the needs of the users, and can even display two different color modes at once for comparisons of work on-screen under different conditions.

Amongst the other features of the 31MU97 are the ability for video editors to edit 4K content in Digital Cinema 4K without image scaling. LG’s True Color Pro software allows users to calibrate the screen to their requirements.

The LG 31MU97 will be available globally from this week.

HP has revealed a new all-in-one computer named Sprout which pushes the everything-you-need-in-one-place envelope to both vertical and horizontal workspaces. Users are able to grab an icon or digital object on the computer's touchscreen display and drag it down to a projected second screen on a touch-enabled pad below for precision tweaking with fingers or a stylus. Overhead scanning technology can digitize physical objects too, which the user can manipulate and move between both display areas.

Sitting above Sprout's 23-inch LED backlit touchscreen HD display is a combined four camera sensor system (which includes Intel's RealSense 3D camera and a 14.6 MP camera), a DLP projector and LED desk lamp known as the Illuminator. This unit points down towards a 20-inch, 20-point capacitive touch mat that has the look of a rather large mouse pad and the HP Workspace platform brings the dual display 3D workspace to life, effectively giving users two touchscreens to work with.

The overhead scanning technology can create 3D-like images of objects placed on the mat, which then appear on the vertical display. These digital clones can be flicked down to the mat onto a work area thrown down from above by the projection unit. The scanned image can be cropped, resized, moved around and otherwise interfered with, text can be added using a virtual keyboard and then the whole shebang returned to the main screen for fine tuning, saving or sending on. Collaborative tools allow operators in multiple locations to simultaneously manipulate the same digital content.

Chugging away behind the impressive-looking blended reality user interface is a high end all-in-one Windows 8.1 PC powered by a 4th gen Intel Core i7-4790S processor with integrated HD4600 graphics and Nvidia GeForce DT 745A GPU (with 2 GB of dedicated video memory). 8 GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM can be expanded to 16 GB, and there's 1 TB of SSD/HDD hybrid storage built in. The AIO also features integrated speakers with DTS Sound+, two digital microphones and a 720p webcam out front.

Connectivity comes in the shape of 802.11a/b/g/n/ac dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, Gigabit Ethernet, two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports (including one that's capable of charging mobile devices), HDMI and a mini PCIe expansion slot.

The company has also launched an application store to support the new immersive computing platform called the Sprout Marketplace, which currently includes uniquely-designed Windows-based apps such as the Martha Stewart CraftStudio, DreamWorks Animation Story Producer, Crayola's Draw & Sing and GestureWorks Gameplay as well as HP's own Create, Collaborate and Capture software.

The HP Spout is set for release on November 9, but is up for pre-order now for US$1,900.

You can see potential applications for the technology in the video below, including scanning a real world building block and adding the digitized version to a child's photo, creating a try before you buy remote sales experience by adding virtual trinkets to the image of a customer and making the most of extra screen real estate to produce popping presentations.

Chisel allows small computational errors to be made, in the name of saving power

You may have heard the expression, "Work smarter, not harder." When applied to humans, it means (partially) that we should do our best work on the tasks that are the most important, instead of wasting time and effort by going all out on every task. Well, that principle is now also being applied to computers. Using MIT's new Chisel system, computers are saving power by delegating less-critical tasks to less-dependable lower-energy hardware. This means mistakes may be made on those tasks, but that's OK.

Chisel is intended to be used mainly by programmers working on fairly high-end, complex projects.

The software scans programs for individual functions that require a lot of processing power. It then presents these to the programmer, and has them indicate how important it is that each one be executed as accurately as possible. Before they commit, however, users can choose the margin of error that they will tolerate for a given task, plus they can see a preview of how the function will work at that setting.

Tasks that are given a high priority are then processed using the computer's most dependable, energy-gobbling hardware. Not-so-important tasks, however, go to the lower-end circuits. An example of such a "some-mistakes-allowed" task would be the rendering of images, where one or two out-of-place pixels simply wouldn't be that big of a deal.

In simulations, the use of Chisel was found to result in energy savings ranging from 9 to 19 percent. The software is based on a previously-developed programming language known as Rely, in which users enter specific code when writing programs, to manually indicate which tasks are more error-tolerant.

Scientists at Rice University are also exploring the concept of putting up with minor errors in order to save energy, with an "inexact" chip which they claim is at least 15 times more efficient than current technology in terms of speed, energy consumption and size – and that's good enough to get lower-priority jobs done without too many mistakes.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04665142496897730322noreply@blogger.com0สหรัฐอเมริกา39.232253141714885 -101.95312527.197705641714883 -122.607422 51.266800641714887 -81.298828tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557457619478238914.post-29780343431272121772014-11-01T02:55:00.000-07:002014-11-01T02:55:16.138-07:00One pilot confirmed dead in SpaceShipTwo crash

Artist's concept of SpaceShipTwo separating from WhiteKnightTwo

One of the two pilots who were aboard Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo during yesterday's test flight accident is dead. At a press conference at the company’s Mojave Air & Space Port, officials from Virgin Galactic said that local authorities have confirmed the death and that the second pilot, who parachuted from the spaceplane before it crashed in the desert, is in hospital after suffering serious injuries.

Details of the accident remain sketchy, but according to the BBC and other news services, Ken Brown, a photographer, saw an explosion aboard SpaceShipTwo shortly after it separated from its mothership, WhiteKnightTwo, on Friday during a test flight in which it suffered a "serious anomaly." WhiteKnightTwo later landed safely.

Virgin Galactic it is cooperating with Scaled Composites, the builder of SpaceShipTwo, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and local authorities. The company says that the NTSB will arrive on Saturday morning and its investigation will last several days. Meanwhile, Virgin Galactic founder Sir Richard Branson is flying out to Mojave.

SpaceShipTwo was designed as a craft to take tourists on suborbital flights into space using a hybrid liquid/solid rocket motor to obtain the necessary speed and altitude. In its second test flight this year, the spacecraft was reported to be using a thermoplastic polyamide solid fuel for the first time in flight. However, there is no indication yet that this was a factor in the incident.

George Whitesides, CEO of Virgin Galactic, provided this statement: "Our primary thoughts at this moment are with the crew and family, and we’re doing everything we can for them now. I’d like to recognize the work of the first responders who we work with in the Antelope Valley for their efforts on behalf of the team. We’re also thinking of the team members that we have at the companies that have been working on this program.

"Space is hard and today was a tough day. We are going to be supporting the investigation as we figure out what happened today. We’re going to get through it. The future rests in many ways on hard days like this, but we believe we owe it to the team, that has been working so hard on this endeavour, to understand this and to move forward. And that is what we’ll do."

Virgin Galactic says that another press conference is scheduled for sometime this weekend and will provide more updates as they become available.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04665142496897730322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557457619478238914.post-21301728129992446392014-10-31T12:07:00.000-07:002014-10-31T12:07:15.810-07:00Can anything save Sony?

Sony is in dire straits.
Major rating agencies Fitch and Moody's have downgraded the company to "junk" status. Standard & Poor's has warned it could soon do the same. The company has announced plans to scale back its smartphone business.

On Friday, Sony reported a second quarter net loss of $1.2 billion, and the company confirmed it's on track to lose a staggering $2.1 billion this fiscal year.

Since assuming Sony's top job in 2012, CEO Kazuo Hirai has spun off the company's television business, sold its Vaio PC operation and slashed thousands of jobs in a bid to rapidly restructure the company.

These are the kind of changes that investors have been calling for. But so far, the CEO has little to show for his efforts.
That stands in stark contrast to Sony's glory days. The Sony Walkman revolutionized the way people listen to music, and Sony's Chromatron and Trinitron lines brought color television to the masses.
But engineers across the company say they are not dwelling on the past. Instead, they are hard at work developing products that might revive the firm.
At one Tokyo campus, a deputy manager demonstrated a credit-card sized electronic device that is designed to replace a wallet full of cash cards used by millions of Japanese consumers. The device connects to a smartphone, and allows users to easily buy train tickets or snacks at the convenience store.
Sony (SNE) is also developing "SmartEyeglass," a wearable pair of glasses that the company says will act as a second screen for a user's smart phone and eventually incorporate facial recognition technology.
Related: Movie theaters ban Google Glass and other wearables
The criticisms of these products are familiar -- Alibaba and Apple already have payment apps, and Google Glass already exists. Where is Sony's next revolutionary offering?
While Sony waits, the company will rely on proven strengths, including its PlayStation console and high-res audio division. The company's Hollywood studio is in good shape, as are its imaging and finance units.
Related: The world is running out of plasma TVs
But can Hirai accelerate change, and answer critics including activist hedge fund managers like Dan Loeb of Third Point? Loeb has pressed the CEO for a more far-reaching restructuring of the company, including a spin off the film and music division.
Analysts say something must be done.
"In high grade products, they still have relatively strong brand recognition in the Japanese market. But globally, unfortunately, no," said Makiko Yoshimura, an electronics analyst with Standard and Poor's. "It's very tough to maintain competitiveness of technology. It's a very tough challenge."
A walk through Toyko's world famous Akihabara electronics district reveals the difficulty of the task facing Sony.
Hirroki Ueno, a young salaryman, holds an iPad as he speaks to CNN.

"Sony doesn't seem to be making new products like they used to," Ueno says. "It seems like they haven't done much in the last 10 years." Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04665142496897730322noreply@blogger.com0สหรัฐอเมริกา40.044437584608588 -99.6679687526.973667584608588 -120.32226575 53.115207584608584 -79.01367175tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557457619478238914.post-91041158758611222682014-10-31T12:01:00.000-07:002014-10-31T12:01:21.418-07:00Apple says it may lose Irish tax break

It's easy to say Russians are hacking the White House and major U.S. companies. It's harder to prove it.

When cybersecurity firms and U.S. government officials attribute attacks to the Russian government -- or independent hackers operating with Kremlin approval -- the typical evidence they use is pretty circumstantial: A computer virus was written in Russian, created during Moscow working hours and aimed at anti-Russian targets.

But the digital realm isn't like the physical one. Hard evidence seldom exists.

Hackers remain anonymous by masking their location, bouncing their computer signals around the world. Hackers who speak one language can write malicious code in another. And they customarily work at odd hours anyway.

"They're just indicators. You never know for sure," said Rick Howard, chief security officer of cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks (PANW). "There isn't going to be a smoking gun."
Still, Russia was blamed for recently hacking JPMorgan, attacking oil and gas companies and placing a "digital bomb' in the Nasdaq.

In the mind of a hacker
C. Thomas, a longtime hacker known as "Space Rogue" who has testified before Congress on computer security, warns against coming to unshakable conclusions.
"Attribution is almost impossible to do," he said. "Anything can be faked. People who do this stuff for a living -- and their lives depend on it -- will forge that stuff."
For instance, American, British, French, Israeli and Russian cyberspies have been known leave decoys that make attacks appear to come from elsewhere, according to several cybersecurity experts with related military experience. Only Chinese hackers have the reputation of being carelessly "loud." FBI Director James Comey recently compared Chinese hackers to a "drunk burglar."
Even the U.S. National Security Agency has a difficult time identifying attackers. For example, President Obama was left without answers from top intelligence advisers when he asked who hacked JPMorgan (JPM), according to The New York Times.
Related: Welcome to the Age of Hacks
So how do you solve hacking whodunnits? It takes some very careful forensics.
Identify the architects: Hacking uses software as a weapon. It gets built piece by piece, like a bomb. And just like a crime scene, security analysts pull apart fragments to unmask the makers.
The average hack relies heavily on "off-the-shelf" tools that are commonly available in the darker corners of the Web, analysts say. But worming your way into a particular computer network requires some custom tools. Hacking groups tend to have a particular, identifying style when building their malware.
Note the timing of the attack: Shortly after the United States imposed sanctions on Russia over its aggression in Ukraine, U.S. and European banks were hit with an unprecedented wave of cyberattacks.
Cybersecurity firm Trend Micro (TMICY), which monitors a smart detection network of nearly 110 million devices, saw its network light up like wildfire on on July 24.
"There was a surge of hundreds of thousands of attacks that just target financial institutions," said Tom Kellerman, Trend Micro's chief cybersecurity officer. "And not just by one or two hacking crews, but by dozens of them."
Consider the victims: Friends don't attack friends.
For example, Kellerman said: "Chinese hackers don't hack banks. The Chinese own the financial sector. You don't hack the banks you own. It doesn't make geopolitical sense."
In another case, which featured the hacking group "SandWorm Team" identified by intelligence firm iSight Partners, the targets included the Ukrainian government and a U.S. scholar who consulted on the Ukrainian conflict. The common denominator: All were deemed unfriendly to Russia.
The bait used to hack them matters too. Ukrainian government employees were lured into downloading a PowerPoint that claimed to be a list of Pro-Russian separatists.
Go with your gut: In the end, though, to blame Russia for a cyberattack is to make a bet: Nobody would go this far to create such a convincing decoy. The simplest explanation is the most probable one, said Dave Aitel of security software provider Immunity.
So, it's always a guess -- a really good guess -- but still a guess.
Samsung pioneered the big-screen phone movement and though the original Galaxy Note was met with quite a bit of doubt and even some ridicule, it's clear that the Korean giant had a huge role to play in shaping the current state of the industry. Over the years, mainstream phones have also grown in terms of screen size, so there isn't much separating the current crop of phablets from their siblings - except, of course in Samsung's case, there's the S Pen.
It's this stylus that sets the Galaxy Note series apart from the competition. Samsung's unique approach to hardware and software integration has really paid off, with people not only replacing their phones but in many cases, also their tablets with a Galaxy Note device.

The latest in the series, the Galaxy Note 4, is a refinement over its predecessors in every way. It looks better, brings more features to the table, and has a whole lot more power at its disposal. Read on to see if it's the right device for you.

Look and feel
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is a chunky phone and you'll definitely be aware of its weight in your pocket or bag. Far from the super-svelte flagship phones that seem to be the norm, there's plenty of room here for a fat battery, stylus, and top-end hardware.

The most notable design element here is the metal rim. Reminiscent of the styling of the Galaxy Alpha (Review | Photos), the new Galaxy Note 4 looks sedate and feels solid. The edges are a little too pronounced though, and we often grazed our hands and ears. There are also four ugly plastic breaks for antenna insulation on the top and bottom - we wish these had been incorporated less obtrusively.

Samsung's latest phones have had dotted rear panels but the Galaxy Note 4 goes back to the faux-leather texture that older models had. We usually considered it tacky, but it's much improved now and most thankfully, there's no awful fake stitching around the edges. The rear looks good and feels great. The Note 4 isn't waterproof, which allows the battery and card slots to be more easily accessible beneath the rear panel.

Samsung also continues to use a physical Home button flanked by capacitive Back and Recents buttons. Just like the on the Galaxy S5 (Review | Photos), there is a fingerprint reader on the Home button. You'll need to swipe a finger across it which is a little less convenient than the tap that Apple's implementation requires. Also inherited from the S5 is the heart rate monitor on the rear, right below the camera bulge.

All buttons and ports are in their usual places - the headset socket and Infrared LED on top; power button on the upper right edge; volume rocker on the left; Micro-USB port and stylus silo on the bottom. The Micro-SIM and microSD card slots are beneath the rear panel, next to the surprisingly compact 3,220mAh battery.

Comparisons to the iPhone 6 Plus (Review | Photos) are inevitable - while Apple's rounded edges and flat back make the extra-large iPhone easier and more comfortable to handle, we usually felt more confident about our grip on the Galaxy Note 4 thanks to the curved and textured back. The iPhone 6 Plus is still somewhat possible to use with a single hand, but the Galaxy Note 4 usually requires both hands whether or not you're using the stylus.

Speaking of which, the S Pen itself is quite neat. It's surprisingly long, which makes it comfortable to hold, though the ribbed texture made our fingers sore after a while. Samsung claims improved pressure sensitivity and handwriting recognition which we will have to test for ourselves.

Specifications
The Galaxy Note series represents the top of the line for Samsung; even more so than the Galaxy S series. The Note 4 is no exception - Samsung has gone with the highest-end screen and SoC currently possible. It's important to note that Samsung offers many significantly different products under the Galaxy Note 4 name due to regional differences and LTE band support requirements. The company has usually launched variants based on its own Exynos processors in India, but this time we get the full-spec Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 version.

The Snapdragon 805 has four Krait 450 CPU cores running at up to 2.7GHz and an Adreno 420 GPU. 4G LTE, 802.11ac Wi-Fi n/ac, GPS, NFC and 4K video encoding/decoding are all handled by the SoC. According to Qualcomm, its new processor can handle all of this and more while delivering outstanding performance and battery life - we couldn't wait to get started on our benchmarks to test these claims.

The ongoing smartphone spec war means Samsung would have looked pretty weak if it had gone with anything less than a 1440x2560-pixel screen, which is exactly what we have here. At 5.7 inches, the Galaxy Note 4's Super AMOLED screen is the same size as the 1080x1920-pixel one on the Note 3, but its increased pixel density makes for a much sharper display. It looks absolutely fantastic, but there's no doubt that it will put a strain on the Snapdragon 805 SoC and the battery. Samsung also touts the Note 4's "Adaptive Display" software tweaks, which adjust the colour profile when you launch specific apps such as the gallery, Google Play Books reader, stock browser and video player.

There's 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, along with a microSD slot. Cards of up to 128GB are supported so you shouldn't ever have to worry about running out of space. This is a critical advantage of the Note 4 over the iPhone 6 Plus, which is capped at 16GB at the same price.

Pretty much every feature you could think of in a high-end smartphone is present and accounted for, with the exception of wireless charging. In addition to the aforementioned Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi ac support, there's a full complement of environmental sensors and of course the heart rate sensor. Interestingly, Samsung has reverted to USB 2.0 on the Galaxy Note 4 rather than USB 3.0 which was introduced on the Note 3 - evidently the unwieldy connector was more trouble than it was worth, even though backward compatibility was fully supported.

Software
The Galaxy Note 4 runs Android 4.4.4 though it's unrecognisable beneath Samsung's extensive custom UI. After years of overdoing it with ugly graphics, bloatware and features that no one could ever find or use, Samsung seems to have found its footing. The Galaxy Note 4 benefits from loads of usability improvements and a very slick style.

A lot of the appeal of the Galaxy Note series stems from the S Pen stylus, which is tightly integrated with the software. As soon as you pull it out of its silo, a ring-shaped menu appears on screen, allowing you to trigger the Action Memo, Smart Select, Image Clip and Screen Write tools, which are not all useful to everyone. You can also click the S Pen's button to call up the menu anytime.

When the stylus tip is near the screen, you'll see a cursor in the shape of a dot. If you hover over icons or tool buttons in some apps, little labels, previews or quick action dialogs will pop up. It's really easy to draw a lasso to select parts of a screen or drag to select text, which you can then share or file away as you please.

There are also a few apps which tie in to the S Pen's functionality. Pen.Up lets you share sketches with the world, S Note lets you scribble information and sync it all with Evernote. Scrapbook lets you collect and organise snippets from anywhere. S Note in particular lets you play with various pen styles including a fountain pen and calligraphic pen. Sensitivity and lag have really been improved, and stylus input feels a lot more natural now.

You can select text just as easily as you would with a mouse - hover over any text screen and hold down the S Pen button, and then just drag and release to select text. This is probably one of the most useful things about the S Pen, and power users will love it.

The rest of Samsung's software features are pretty much the same as what we've seen on earlier Note series devices and the Galaxy S5. To the left of the first homescreen is a Flipboard-powered news reader view which can be customised with your own preferred news categories. The usual kitschy animations and sound effects can be found throughout, including a few new ones on the lockscreen. Multi Window lets you run apps in floating windows or in a split-screen view. This includes quite a few third-party apps, not just Samsung's own. You can also tap an icon in the upper right corner of each thumbnail in the task switcher to pop an app into its own floating window.

The Galaxy Note 4 incorporates Samsung's now-familiar settings and tweaks, including Smart Stay, which keeps the screen on as long as your face is in front of it; Power Saving and Ultra Power Saving modes; Private mode; Car Mode; options to make one-handed use easier, and lots more.

Samsung includes S Health, which is much the same as it is on the Galaxy S5, although it's even more unwieldy to use the Galaxy Note 4 as a fitness tracker. You'll get much more use out of it if you also own one of Samsung's many smartwatches. The bloatware is surprisingly constrained, with only Flipboard, Evernote, Dropbox, Whatsapp, Instagram, Facebook, Facebook Messenger and the Facebook Pages Manager apps preloaded (other than the usual raft of Google apps). Smart Remote by Peel lets you use the Galaxy Note 4 as a universal remote control, thanks to its Infrared LED. You can "disable" many of these apps, though they cannot actually be uninstalled.

There's a Galaxy Essentials widget pointing you to several Samsung apps that aren't preloaded, and also a Galaxy Apps browser that shows curated lists of apps that work well on the Galaxy Note 4, such as those optimised for the S Pen. Buyers also get access to the Galaxy Gifts programme which includes a three-month Magzter subscription, 25 percent discount in the ShoppingnMore app, free photo prints form Zoomin worth Rs. 1,000, and a few other offers.

Camera

Samsung's camera app is powerful and does a good job keeping things uncluttered yet accessible. It's a good idea to poke around and discover all the features that are hidden away in the submenus. We were impressed with the Galaxy Note 4's hardware and software - it seemed to focus very quickly and produce good results.

However we were in for a shock - our test unit seemed to have a serious defect. At random times, the entire image preview on screen would suddenly begin to wobble and roll, and videos we captured exhibited the same effect. On further probing, we managed to trigger this behaviour deliberately by rapidly shifting focus, and we found it was much more likely to happen with HDR enabled or while shooting 4K video. The issue persisted with multiple third-party apps and after restoring the phone to factory settings and installing all available updates. We also felt a constant though mild vibration, all of which led to the conclusion that the OIS mechanism was malfunctioning. Samsung was quick to send us a second unit and we tested both side by side. We're happy to report that the second phone was perfectly fine - our experience was thus not indicative of any manufacturing defect, but most likely a fault with one specific device.

Photos and videos taken with our replacement test device came out very well indeed. The camera excelled in daylight shots, capturing fine details even in distant subjects. OIS definitely has a part to play in this, but the near-16-megapixel resolution doesn't hurt either. Low light performance was good, but not as strong. HDR results were very nice, with rich colours, though it's a mystery why HDR isn't automatically detected.

4K Ultra high-def videos came out beautifully. You'll definitely want to invest in a high-capacity microSD card if you're planning to take a lot of UHD video. Certain functions, such as simultaneous still captures and continuous autofocus are not available while shooting in UHD. We also quite liked the results we were able to achieve with the front camera, including 1080p video. One very neat touch is the ability to use the heart rate sensor on the rear to trigger a shutter release, which is far easier than reaching for the on-screen button.

Performance
We were curious to see how well the new Snapdragon 805 performed, and our initial impressions were very positive. In our first few days with the Galaxy Note 4, we were mostly pleased with its overall performance but were very pleasantly surprised to see how slowly the battery was draining. The phone's interface was mostly smooth but there was a little bit of lag in some spots, such as calling up the app switcher and shuffling multiple windowed apps around on screen. These things might have more to do with Samsung's heavy UI skin than hardware.

Another thing we noticed was that the Galaxy Note 4 tended to get hot when doing anything intensive, like running a heavy game or recording 4K video. This had a measurable impact on our benchmark tests - AnTuTu gave us a surprisingly low score of 26,606 on its first run, but that improved to 46,678 in subsequent rounds of testing.

Other benchmarks revealed predictably strong scores when it came to CPU-based tasks, and weak graphics performance thanks to the enormous load placed on the Snapdragon 805 by the Quad-HD screen. The GFXbench score of 27.7fps was well below par for a flagship device, and 3DMark's Ice Storm Extreme test which should have maxed out delivered 9422 points (which is still quite high). Quadrant blazed through its run with a score of 23,259 points, and Sunspider also impressed us with a low time of just 378.9ms.

So while the Galaxy Note 4 looks and feels great, and is certainly impressive when shown off to friends and colleagues, it falls a bit short in the power department. You won't be able to enjoy intense games to their fullest potential on the big screen, and even heavy multitasking can be a bit of a mixed bag.

Videos are rendered beautifully, including all our high-definition samples and UHD clips shot with the phone itself. Sound from the mono speaker on the rear is surprisingly deep, loud and rich. Everything from intricate classical music to modern EDM sounded quite good, even at full volume.

Battery life proved to be one of the Galaxy Note 4's best features. Despite its massive power-hungry screen, this phone lasted 15 hours, 11 minutes in our video loop test. You should easily be able to get two full days of usage out of each charge. Another nice touch is that Samsung ships a bulky 2,000mAh charger with the Note 4, which allows it to juice up remarkably quickly.

Verdict
Samsung has broken its long-held tradition of producing cheap-looking plastic phones and has managed to make its latest Note flagship look rather refined. With all its competitors moving to metal bodies, it couldn't have done anything else. Compared to its predecessors, this phone radiates power. On the other hand, those same market forces have potentially compelled Samsung to overreach in terms of specifications - honestly, Full HD was pretty impressive on last year's model and we wouldn't have minded sticking with that screen resolution considering it would have meant drastic improvements in terms of graphics performance.

Ultimately, the Note series is focused on enabling productivity and creativity, which is what Samsung delivers in spades. This phone certainly has the chops to back up its aspirations. Samsung has honed its software skills over the years, and though the Galaxy Note 4 UI still isn't as visually or functionally efficient as we'd like, it does deliver an experience that goes above and beyond what stock Android can achieve. Particularly, the S Pen has multiple very clear purposes and feels like a perfectly natural part of the usage experience - it's there when you want it but isn't forced upon you when you don't.

If you like the idea of using a smartphone with a stylus, this is currently the only game in town. Even if that doesn't particularly appeal to you, you'll find things you can do and enjoy doing with it. Pretty much every manufacturer now has a large-screen flagship phone, but none can match the versatility of the Galaxy Note 4. In that sense, its strongest competitor is the Galaxy Note 3 (Review | Photos), thanks to recent price cuts which have made it surprisingly good value for money.
LG, back in 2013, launched what it claimed was the world's first Quad-HD AH-IPS LCD panel for smartphones, and the company used the panel on its 2014 flagship, the G3.
Now, the South Korean company further has upped the ante and has developed a 5.3-inch full-HD LCD panel for smartphones sporting what it claims is "the world's narrowest bezel at 0.7mm".

LG reveals that it will start mass production of the display next month, and will be supplying it first to China. The company believes that China has more demand for large screen smartphones.

The company notes that to achieve a narrow bezel of 0.7mm, it used a new 'Neo Edge' module processing technology and the Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) technology.

LG says, "To realize the 0.7mm bezel width on the left and right sides of the panel, which is narrower than the 0.8mm thickness of a credit card, LG Display used its "Neo Edge" module processing technology and the world's first "Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT)" technology."

The company explains that the new Neo Edge technology uses an adhesive, which replaces a double-sided tape used previously for attaching and completely sealing the total area and edges of the panel's circuit board and backlight unit.

"Because there is no plastic guide panel to attach the panel and backlight, the Neo Edge technology helps achieve minimal bezel width, while blocking light leakage and being waterproof and dustproof," it adds.

The Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) technology, on the other hand, is said to be exclusively developed by LG Display and is claimed to "reduce the need for bezel space because the touch panel is embedded into the LCD module."

Commenting on the announcement, Byeong-koo Kim, Vice President and Head of IT/Mobile Development Group at LG Display said, "With this innovative product having many advantages, ranging from its narrow 0.7mm bezel and high resolution picture quality to its slim design and touch-embedded solutions, LG Display will continue to lead the growing market for large screen smartphones, meeting the expectations of customers and users by enhancing the quality of devices."
A recent GFX Benchmark suggests that Xiaomi is working on a 9.2 inch tablet with SIM capabilities.
After making headlines all over Asia for its low priced devices, Chinese OEM Xiaomi is gearing up for a 9.2-inch tablet. A recent mystery device was spotted on GFXBench codenamed Xiaomi 2014811 with a 9.2 inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.
The mystery device in question is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 with CPUs clocked at 1.2GHz and comes with an Adreno 306 GPU. Given specs also suggest 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage. GFXBench also revealed that the device supports a single SIM and runs on Android 4.4.4.
Samsung today took the wraps off its long-rumored Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 smartphones. Both the smartphones come with a full-metal design and are noticeably thinner. The Galaxy A3 sports mid-range specification, whereas the Galaxy A5 packs relatively higher-end hardware. With both the smartphones, Samsung is trying to lure in the youth audience with 5-megapixel selfie camera and several features it first debuted with the Galaxy Note 4.

The Galaxy A3 is the mid-range smartphone with which the company would be hoping to compete with the likes of the Motorola Moto G among others. It packs a 4.5-inch display with qHD (540×960) screen resolution. It is powered by a quad-core 1.2GHz processor paired with 1GB of RAM, and a 1,900mAh battery. On the camera front, it has an 8-megapixel rear snapper with 1080p video recording capability, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. It runs on Android 4.4 KitKat. On the connectivity front, it supports 4G LTE / 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, and A-GPS/ GLONASS.

The Galaxy A5 has comparatively better hardware specifications. It sports a 5-inch AMOLED display with 720p screen resolution. It is also powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor coupled with 2GB of RAM. On the camera side, it has a 13-megapixel rear shooter, and a 5-megapixel snapper upfront. It comes with 16GB internal memory and a microSD card slot. It has a 2,300 mAh battery. On the connectivity front, it supports 4G LTE / 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, and A-GPS/ GLONASS.

The LTE variants of both devices come with NFC chip. Among other features, both smartphones also come with Ultra Power Saving Mode, as well as an option to choose from four themes, a feature that Samsung hasn’t included in other devices. The devices also has the latest camera app loaded with features including Wide Selfie, Palm Selfie, Rear Cam Selfie, and Beauty Face, which we first saw in the Galaxy Note 4.

The phones come in several color options, including pearl white, midnight black, platinum silver, light blue, soft pink, and champagne gold. The company hasn’t revealed the pricing details just yet, but says the phones will launch in select markets including China starting November.

The Samsung Gear S, a Tizen-powered smartwatch with its own 3G connection, will be available through both AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint, the carriers announced today (Oct 30th). Unlike other smartwatches, which require a smartphone tethered via Bluetooth to receive notifications and the like, the Gear S has its own SIM card slot, so that wearers can make and respond to phone calls, text messages and email even if their phone isn't nearby.

The Samsung Gear S looks a bit different from Samsung's other smartwatch, the Gear 2. For one, it has a larger 2-inch curved Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 480 x 360p. Inside is a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8626 processor, 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of storage.

During our hands-on time with the Gear S, we were impressed with its large display, but its 300 mAh battery--similar to the Gear 2--means that you should only expect about a day's use out of the watch before it needs to be recharged. Also, it remains to be seen how many apps will be ready for Tizen OS, though Samsung said as many as 1,000 would be available at launch.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04665142496897730322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557457619478238914.post-3353764281109929372014-10-30T21:45:00.001-07:002014-10-30T23:07:27.070-07:00Android co-founder Rubin leaving Google to lead startup incubator

Andy Rubin leaves Google and its ambitious robotics projects behind to return to another of his passions: Building successful startups.

The robots have a new leader.

Andy Rubin, who founded Google's Android mobile software, and less than a year ago was tapped to run the company's nascent robotics efforts, is leaving the Internet giant.

"I want to wish Andy all the best with what's next," Google CEO Larry Page said in a statement. "With Android he created something truly remarkable -- with a billion plus happy users. Thank you."

The departure is potentially a blow to the company's ambitions in robotics, where Google has made large investments, including acquiring more than eight companies, including Boston Dynamics and Atlas. Page has made big bets in areas beyond its search and advertising business, its biggest moneymaker, as it looks to where its future revenue streams will come from.

James Kuffner, another member of the robotics group, will take over as head of the division, according to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news. Rubin is leaving Google to build an incubator for startups to build tech hardware, according to the Journal.

In 2010, Google research scientist Kuffner came up with the idea of cloud robotics, robots that leverage the Internet, crowdsourcing, and open-sourcing to expand their processing power and knowledge base. It's not hard to see how a cloud-connected robot that is gathering data in your home from all its various sensors could be a perambulating privacy violation waiting to happen.

Meanwhile, Rubin has made a career of building companies from scratch and tackling ambitious projects, often focused on robotics or mobile computing. He started at Google in 2005 when Page and company bought his mobile operating system startup Android. Rubin got his start as a robotics engineer at optics maker Carl Zeiss AG in 1986, and went on to work at Apple and Microsoft.

Rubin has been credited with turning Android into a serious competitor for Apple's iOS, which powers the iPhone. Android is now the most popular mobile operating system, running on more than 80 percent of the world's smartphones. Sundar Pichai took the helm of the Android team in March 2013 after Page announced that Rubin was going to work on another project for the company. That project turned out to be robotics.

Rubin told the New York Times in December 2013 that "computers are starting to sprout legs and move around in the environment." But such projects are "moonshots," Google's term for ambitious, out-there initiatives, Rubin told the newspaper, and that Google's efforts could produce results in a few years.

When the story was posted, Rubin tweeted, "The future is looking awesome!" He hasn't tweeted since.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04665142496897730322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557457619478238914.post-63658354826109304142014-10-30T21:16:00.001-07:002014-10-30T21:16:36.561-07:00Samsung bringing curved Gear S to U.S. on Nov. 7; pricing like a phoneSamsung bringing curved Gear S to U.S. on Nov. 7; pricing like a phone

As attention in the wearable space is focused on Microsoft's new Band, wearable veteran Samsung has revealed its plans for releasing its sixth smartwatch in the U.S. The Gear S, the company's smartwatch with a curved 2-inch screen and built-in cellular connection, will begin rolling out to U.S. carriers beginning November 7.

AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint have all signed up to carry Samsung's latest watch with AT&T and Sprint the first out of the gate. Both carriers will release the device on the 7th with T-Mobile releasing it on November 9th. Verizon will also be offering the device, but the company has yet reveal exactly when it would make the watch available.

Samsung is hoping the Gear S proves more successful than its prior wearable efforts since the device is one of the first wearables to feature a cellular connection to make phone calls, send text messages and connect to the Internet even when not connected to a smartphone. But that flexibility comes at a price. Without a contract or payment plan the device will cost between $350 and $400, though all the carriers will be offering various on and off-contract payment options. Unlike Timex's Ironman One+ GPS watch, which is another 3G-connected wearable that comes with a year of free data from AT&T, the carriers will also be charging for data plans on the Gear S.

T-Mobile is charging $5 a month for unlimited talk, text and 500 MB of 4G LTE data on the watch. AT&T and Sprint will charge $10 a month for users adding it to their respective Mobile Share or Family Share plans, though Sprint will waive the monthly charge for customers whose plans have at least 20 GB of data. Verizon has yet to reveal its monthly charges.

Similar to Samsung's recent Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit wearables the Gear S will run the company's Tizen software and will only be able to be paired with other Samsung phones like the Galaxy S 5 and recently released Galaxy Note 4. If you have another device you can forward your number to the phone and use the built-in cellular service on the watch to access email, music or social networks when you don't have your phone with you.
